Swamp land selection lists, 1853-1854.

Lists of tracts selected by the State of Illinois under Swamp Land Act of 1850 as swampy or subject to periodic overflow and therefore unfit for cultivation were compared with the Surveyor General's survey field notes to determine if the swamp land designation was valid. Selections with which the Surveyor General concurred were then sent to the General Land Office for further action. Each list contains the selected tract legal description and acreage; federal land district in which tracts were located; and Surveyor General's approval date with his signature.
